Microsoft Quits OpenAI Board Seat Amid Antitrust Scrutiny of AI Partnerships
Microsoft has relinquished its seat on the board of OpenAI, saying its participation is no longer needed because the ChatGPT maker has improved its governance since being roiled by boardroom chaos last year. In a Tuesday letter, Microsoft confirmed it was resigning, "effective immediately," from its role as an observer on the artificial intelligence company's board. "We appreciate the support shown by OpenAI leadership and the OpenAI board as we made this decision," the letter said. The surprise departure comes amid intensifying scrutiny from antitrust regulators of the powerful AI partnership. Microsoft has reportedly invested 13 billion in OpenAI.

Apple reportedly even held talks with Meta about an AI partnership as it plays catch-up
Apple is apparently looking to take all the help it can get to integrate generative AI into its recently announced Apple Intelligence. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources with knowledge of the discussions, Apple has held talks with Meta about the possibility of using the company's generative AI model. It also reportedly had similar discussions with startups Anthropic and Perplexity. As of now, though, nothing has been finalized, WSJ reports. At WWDC earlier this month, Apple officially announced its much-rumored partnership with OpenAI that will bring ChatGPT to newer iPhones, iPads and Macs with the upcoming generation of the devices' OS.

Oracle and Nvidia expand AI partnership
Oracle and Nvidia have extended their partnership to help speed customer adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) services. As part of the deal, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which is Oracle's cloud service, will beef up the infrastructure with tens of thousands of Nvidia GPUs, both the Ampere A100 currently on the market and the upcoming Hopper H100. Oracle will also add Nvidia's AI software stack that supports AI training and deep learning. This includes an upcoming release of Nvidia AI Enterprise software with access to Nvidia's AI development and deployment platform that provides processing engines for each step of the AI workflow, from data processing and AI model training to simulation and large-scale deployment. "Our expanded alliance will deliver the best of both companies' expertise to help customers across industries--from healthcare and manufacturing to telecommunications and financial services--overcome the multitude of challenges they face," said Safra Catz, CEO of Oracle, in a statement.
Why Your Business Should Pursue Strong Partnerships When Implementing AI
When making AI part of your business' processes, make certain to back the effort with strong ... [ ] partnerships. We live in a time when businesses are increasingly implementing AI to automate or outsource many of their practices. A recent report from NewVantage found that 91.7 percent of leading firms were planning to increase their investment in AI, in large part thanks to the potential benefits it can unlock. Another survey from SnapLogic found that 81 percent of office workers felt that AI improved their overall work performance. Eighty-nine percent said AI had the potential to support them in up to half of their work responsibilities, while 61 percent said that using AI made them more efficient and productive.
Microsoft expands its AI partnership with Meta
Microsoft and Meta are extending their ongoing AI partnership, with Meta selecting Azure as "a strategic cloud provider" to accelerate its own AI research and development. Microsoft officials shared more details about the latest on the Microsoft-Meta partnership on Day 2 of the Microsoft Build 2022 developers conference. Microsoft and Meta -- back when it was still known as Facebook -- announced the ONNX (Open Neural Network Exchange) format in 2017 in the name of enabling developers to move deep-learning models between different AI frameworks. Microsoft open sourced the ONNX Runtime, which is the inference engine for models in the ONNX format, in 2018. Today, Meta officials said they'll be using Azure to accelerate research and development across the Meta AI group.
Telix and Invicro Advance AI Partnership
Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited announces that it has advanced a partnership with Invicro LLC (Invicro), a global, industry-leading imaging CRO, and part of REALM IDx, Inc., to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) platform to accompany Telix's PSMA-PET imaging agent, Illuccix (kit for the preparation of gallium Ga 68 gozetotide) – known as TelixAI. TelixAI seeks to increase the efficiency and reproducibility of clinicians' imaging assessments using advanced analysis capabilities with an initial focus on prostate cancer. The platform is designed to do this by automatically separating healthy versus abnormal tracer uptake and then classifies lesions as either visceral (soft tissue) or bone lesions. Invicro has a depth of experience in AI, machine learning and algorithm development for medical imaging. Its industry leading medical image analyst team consists of over fifty medical image processing scientists.

AI partnership to enhance RF systems and data analysis - Military Embedded Systems
Northrop Grumman Corporation has announced that the company is on track to begin collaborating and investing in Deepwave Digital with the intent to support research, development, and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. According to the company, this partnership will aim to improve communications processing power for next-generation capabilities for defense customers. "We're evolving the way we think and the way we work, to use emerging commercial technologies to provide our warfighters the most advanced capabilities more quickly," said Chris Daughters, vice president of research, technology and engineering, Aeronautics Systems, Northrop Grumman. Throughout the year, the Congressional Research Service has been updating the document "Artificial Intelligence and National Security" to include arguments encouraging defense manufacturers to foster strategic partnerships with the private sector, especially when developing AI technologies. The goal is to combat the gradual speed at which the Department of Defense has been adopting and implementing AI policy in contrast to how quickly the commercial industry is moving.

Defense Official Calls Artificial Intelligence the New Oil
Artificial intelligence is the new oil, and the governments or the countries that get the best datasets will unquestionably develop the best AI, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center's chief technology officer said Oct. 15. Speaking on a panel about AI superpowers at the Politico AI Summit, Nand Mulchandani said AI is a very large technology and industry. "It's not a single, monolithic technology," he said. "It's a collection of algorithms, technologies, etc., all cobbled together to call AI." The United States has access to global datasets, and that's why global partnerships are so incredibly important, he said, noting the Defense Department launched the AI partnership for defense at the JAIC recently to have access to global datasets with partners, which gives DOD a natural advantage in building these systems at scale.
